Kinetic Etudes for Disklavier / Piano 2.0 explores a 21st-century extension of the piano-etude tradition through computer-controlled performance, physical and visual motion, and new forms of human–machine interaction.
The project follows a line from Franz Liszt’s performer-composer virtuosity through György Ligeti’s rhythmic and structural imagination to Conlon Nancarrow’s radical studies for player piano.
The cycle develops interval-based, structural, movement-based and visually derived studies, including pieces shaped by waves, gravity, ornament and dance. Some studies also explore interactive processes in which a pianist and a Disklavier create a real-time four-hand relationship.
The work is being developed for modern ENSPIRE PRO Disklavier systems, allowing extremely precise playback, fine dynamic control and musical structures that are not restricted by the anatomy of two human hands.
